What is Rachel's Challenge?

Although we had only a five parents at this morning's parent-principal coffee, we had a powerful discussion. I shared during our time together that next year Hixson Middle School is committed to implementing Rachel's Challenge as a means supporting a safe and friendly environment among students and adults in the building. The objectives of Rachel's Challenge are to:
  • Create a safe learning environment for all students by re-establishing civility and delivering proactive anecdotes to school violence and bullying.
  • Improve academic achievement by engaging students’ hearts, heads and hands in the learning process.
  • Provide students with social/emotional education that is both culturally relevant.
  • Train adults to inspire, equip and empower students to affect permanent positive change.
There are several ways Hixson Middle School will partner with Rachel's Challenge to accomplish this:
  • All students will participate in a school-wide assembly,
  • 100 students and 10 teachers will participate in a student leadership training,
  • Our community will be invited to participate in an evening community event, and
  • 100 students school will also participate in a chain reaction event.
The first three listed above will take place on 8/22/13 and the fourth event will take place in the spring. Interested in more information:

I appreciate how our counselors have worked to bring these events to our school and the relationship they have built with Rachel's Challenge. We believe the objectives and the events are important. You can show your support by clicking the links above, attending next year's community event, or donating to Hixson Middle School so we can better afford this project.
