Hixson Highlights - November 20, 2015

From the Principal, Dr. Smith...
Hixson students have been busy learning and growing their skills, knowledge, and critical thinking!  What a talented group of ladies and gentlemen!  Collaborative work in 7th grade social studies leads students to thinking outside of the box.  We heard an amazing choir performance this week from our 7th and 8th grade students, absolutely wonderful! Shop class is working on a choice project making wood creations, sanding and using a jigsaw.  Our orchestra students represented us well at the Barnes and Noble fundraiser last weekend, many compliments were bestowed upon them!  Dr. Fick lead students through a critical thinking collaborative Fishbowl discussion!  GEMS students had the opportunity to discuss politics with their guest speaker, Mrs. Gavin's dad!

Student Directory Information
The Board of Education has recently revised its policy on directory information, (student information that can be released routinely). Under the revised policy JO, the district can now release the e-mail addresses of parents. This is a change.
Please read the information below, which explains what is considered directory information. If you do NOT want your information or your child’s released, please let the district know by putting your request in writing to John M. Thomas, student services director, Webster Groves School District, 400 E. Lockwood Ave., Webster Groves, Mo. 63119. If possible, please let us know by Dec. 1.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, a federal law, requires that the school district, with certain exceptions, obtain your written consent before disclosing identifiable information from your child’s records. However, the district can disclose appropriately designated “directory information” without written consent, unless you have notified the district in writing not to do so. Directory information includes a student's name; address; date and place of birth; parents'/guardians’ names, home address, telephone number and e-mail addresses; grade level; enrollment status (e.g., full-time or part-time); student identification number (this is not the student’s social security number); participation in district-sponsored or district-recognized activities and sports; weight and height of members of athletic teams; dates of attendance; degrees, honors and awards received; artwork or course work displayed by the district; schools or school districts previously attended; and photographs, videotapes, digital images and recorded sound unless such records would be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy.

News from the District:
This week, the St. Louis County Assessor’s office announced that part of Laclede Groves senior facility will begin paying taxes next year. The action, which comes after negotiations with the assessor’s office and Lutheran Senior Services, will bring additional tax money to the Webster Groves School District. The county has not announced yet how much the district will receive. Under the settlement, a portion of Laclede Groves -- operated by Lutheran Senior Services -- will remain tax-exempt and a portion will be taxable. The settlement also involves a senior facility operated by Lutheran Senior Services in Ballwin.

The Webster Groves School District is pleased with this settlement and thankful for the anticipated revenue.

Thank you for your support and encouragement of your children.  We look forward to our continued partnership!

Please let me know if I can be of help to you or your child in any way.  Feel free to email, call, or schedule a visit- my door is always open!

Sincerely,

Dr. Smith
