From the Principal, Dr. Smith...

"He Named Me Malala"

We have had a wonderful week of learning and community at Hixson.  Thank you parents for the support of your child and involvement in parent-teacher conferences this week.  Please know we appreciate you!

Speaking of appreciation...a HUGE shout out of THANKS to the Hixson PTO for your generous gift to teachers, book fair support, and the AMAZING dinner you provided our staff Thursday evening.  The chili was delicious and it was so thoughtful of you to decorate for Halloween and provide great side dishes and dessert!  THANK YOU PTO, you are the BEST!

Featured above: Students in FACS (family and consumer science) class use the process of inquiry to learn about the importance of exact measurement in the science of cooking.  It was fun watching students navigate through a "pinch" of this and a "scoop" of that!  This week we held the annual health fair at Hixson, students had the opportunity to learn about a variety of health topics from nutrition and healthy eating to genetics and safety.  7th grade science students were solving a variety of problems through designing solutions and creating prototypes.  This is one great group of creative problem solving thinkers!  Our future is definitely in solid hands!  Hixson is now awarding positive PAWSitive office referrals.  This means that teachers recognize students for good character and citizenship and for being READY, RESPECTFUL, and RESPONSIBLE.  I personally congratulate all students who receive a positive referral, we send a letter home to parents in the mail and each term we invite these students to a "popcorn party" thanks to our popcorn machine PTO purchased for us last year!!!

Hixson's Fall Party - Next Friday!

Hixson Hub ON AIR
Starting in the 2014-2015 school year a group of our learners, participating in a passion driven discovery project, began to discuss what radio would look like if it was created and designed in today's world.

The major themes that came up were:
1. Internet based
2. Accessible via any Internet connected device
3. Wide range of shows/programs

They began to explore the tools available to them now to see what they could produce.

The culminating exploration led to the creation of the HixsonHub ON AIR podcast now available in iTunes. This podcast will feature daily audio announcements, and future programming from members of our GFA groups as well as some other learners working on passion based projects during discovery hour.

Check it out today by searching for HixsonHub ON AIR it on your preferred Podcast app
or click the link below to add it to your iTunes Podcast list.
