"He Named Me Malala"

We are very excited to share that Hixson has been awarded a grant for all students and staff to attend a viewing of the documentary "He Named Me Malala".

Malala Yousafzai is eighteen years old and the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. She was shot in the head in 2012 by the Taliban because of her outspoken views about girls’ education in Pakistan and other parts of the world where girls are prevented from getting an education.

This experience will take place on Tuesday, October 20th. The field trip is free to all students, including transportation. The concession stand will be open for students to purchase snacks and all students will be given a 13% discount on their purchases.

We will be attending the 10:30 showing at Ronnies Cine. Upon our return to school, students will eat lunch in their core classrooms. Students can bring their own lunch or get a sack lunch from the cafeteria.

We sincerely apologize for the short notice. While we learned almost a month ago that we had been awarded the grant, the organization just notified us Wednesday morning that our scheduled date is Tuesday.

This documentary is rated PG-13.  At Hixson Middle, our students range in age from 12-14 years old. Please visit the Kids-In-Mind website for specific content related to the PG-13 rating http://www.kids-in-mind.com/h/henamedmemalala.htm.  We have also attached a trailer for the documentary below.

We have created a form that we ask you to complete and send in to school only if you DO NOT wish for your child to attend this field trip. To view and print this form, please click here

This experience ties to the thematic standard of Culture and Cultural Diversity of the National Social Standards for Social Studies Teachers. Teachers have already planned lessons to share with students Malala's impact on global education and provide background knowledge before we attend this field trip on Tuesday. The Malala Fund also provides a parent discussion guide for your use to continue the conversation at home.
