Hixson Highlights - January 8, 2016

From the Principal, Dr. Smith...

There seems to be a glitch in our system and a blank Highlights was sent this morning - I apologize for sending two emails today!

Happy 2016 Hixson Families!

Hixson students have started the new year with a bang!  Right out of the gates our classes have been focused on new curriculum and engaging hands-on activities.  We were also happy this week to host visitors from the Allen Distinguished Educators Foundation who joined us on Tuesday to interview us and observe learning in Mr. Rambach's and Mr. Dempsey's classes.  These 8th grade science teachers are finalists competing for a $25,000.00 grant from Allen Distinguished Educators (see more below). Congratulations to Mr. Rambach and Mr. Dempsey!

Hixson Middle School science teachers Patrick Dempsey and Rob Rambach have been selected as finalists in the Allen Distinguished Educators (ADE) Program. The ADE Program recognizes outstanding K–12 engineering, computer science, and entrepreneurship teaching through the use of hands-on, experiential, and project-based learning. In March 2016, up to seven of 16 finalists from across the nation will receive a $25,000 award.
The program was developed by Paul G. Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, based on his belief that innovation is a key driver in improving learning opportunities for young people.

Parent Survey on Middle School Schedule

Please take a moment to provide us feedback on our master schedule at Hixson.  We are looking for parent input regarding our school's schedule as we continue to look at providing the best opportunities possible for learning for students at Hixson. The survey will be open for two weeks. Thank you!

Volunteers for Superintendent Interviews

The district needs your help! Earlier this school year, the School Board began a search for a superintendent to replace Dr. Sarah Riss, who is retiring at the end of June. Part of this process includes interviews of finalists for the position by parents and community members.

If you would like to be considered for participation on an interview committee, please let us know. The board has scheduled interviews for Jan. 25-28 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Participants would need to arrive at the central office no later than 11 a.m. and need to be able to participate on all four days if needed. Please contact Lori Medlin by e-mailing her at medlin.lori@wgmail.org no later than Jan. 13.  Please share your name, contact information and a brief statement as to why you would like to participate in the interview process. The board will be selecting a representative group to serve on this important committee.

The board appreciates all active and involved community support as we continue the search for a new superintendent. Please consider helping us by taking part in these finalist interviews.

Important Dates:

Friday 1/8: Term 3 progress reports mailed
Thursday 1/14: Orchestra's Pops Concert grades 5-12 in Roberts Gym at the HS at 6:30 pm
Monday 1/18: NO SCHOOL in observance of Dr. King

Thank you for your support and encouragement of your children.  We look forward to our continued partnership!

Please let me know if I can be of help to you or your child in any way.  Feel free to email, call, or schedule a visit- my door is always open!

Sincerely,
