2017
I walked
into Target today to pick up a few items and saw the merchandise that signals
the start of school-bright, shiny school supply displays. It’s hard to believe that the first day of
school is only 26 days away. As the lazy
days of summer come to an end, the frenzy and excitement that comes with a new
school year are beginning. At Hixson,
the phenomenal custodial staff are working tirelessly to ensure our school is
clean and ready for the new year. Each
day, I’m running into teachers working in their classrooms as they begin to
prepare rooms to welcome kids. There is
an excitement in the air about the upcoming school year and what it holds. Perhaps a layer of the excitement I feel also
stems from my eagerness and anticipation to begin a new journey with my new
school family. Another layer is the
excitement, noise and inspiration that kids bring into a building. Last night, I caught up on an episode of
World of Dance. It’s a dance competition
featuring kids and adults. In the junior
division, there was a young dance named Eva Igo. As these types of shows go, the human element
of the show featured a coaching session with Jennifer Lopez. In short, Jennifer told Eva there was
something she was holding back in her dance and she had to peel back the layer
and allow her vulnerability to come through.
Eva took the advice and allowed her vulnerability to show in her
performance which I thought was quite inspiring. Yes, at the end of the day, it’s a television
show. However, last night, it was a
great reminder that kids are naturally inspiring human beings and we have the privilege
of supporting them as they shed layers to reveal their true selves. This is probably what brings countless
educators back into the folds of the work to serve kids each day. I’m looking forward to a year of inspiration.
Back in May,
there was some important information sent out to families with dates for
upcoming events. I want to highlight
some of those dates as they come up:

There are a set of annual forms that will need to be filled out as
well. Please follow this link to access the forms. https://sites.google.com/wgcloud.org/hxms/home
If you are
unable to make the schedule pick up dates or make up day, please don’t hesitate
to contact your grade level administrator.
Finally, for
ALL 8th graders,
documentation that a meningococcal immunization AND Tdap booster immunization have been obtained will need to be
turned into the school nurse, Shannon Conrad.
Unfortunately, this is a state law so if an 8th grader has
not turned in documentation that the immunization was obtained, then they will
not be allowed to start on the first day of school. Please don’t hesitate to call us if you have
any questions or concerns about this at 314-963-6450.
With
Gratitude,
